The process to install Rank Math Pro is pretty straightforward, but there are a few key steps to make sure your setup goes smoothly and you unlock all the plugin’s best features.
If you’re new to WordPress plugins or just switching from another SEO tool, I’ll walk you through the whole installation. I’ll share what I’ve learned from my own experience, including practical tips to avoid common mistakes. By the end, your site will have powerful SEO tools set up and ready to use.
I did make a mistake while installing RankMath Pro and it actually took me a few days to accomplish it but there was no need for that.
As someone who manages two WordPress sites and relies on Rank Math Pro every day, I know how much of a difference it makes. Whether you run a blog, an online store, or a client project, getting this plugin properly installed is one of the most important SEO tasks you can take on today.
It did take me three days to install it but that was only because I did not take the time to read the instructions. So, I decided to write this article:
What You Need Before you start to Install RankMath Pro
Having the right information and tools ready can make the installation process much smoother. Here’s what you need ahead of time:
- An active WordPress website (selfhosted, not WordPress.com’s free plan). The website hosting platform I use for my websites is Wealthy-Affiliate and they do run on WordPress.
- Administrator access to your WordPress site
- A purchased Rank Math Pro subscription and access to your account on the Rank Math website
Rank Math Pro is a paid plugin, so you’ll need to buy a license if you haven’t already. You can learn more about Rank Math Pro features on their official site. I usually recommend double checking your WordPress version to make sure it’s up-to-date, as this helps to avoid compatibility issues.
Step 1: Purchase and Download Rank Math Pro
Buying and downloading the plugin is your first move. Here’s what I do:
- Head to the official Rank Math website and log in or create an account. Once logged in, select the Pro plan or the plan that fits your needs.
- After payment, visit the “My Account” section and look for your downloads.
- Download the Rank Math Pro ZIP plugin file directly to your computer.
I recommend keeping your purchase confirmation and login details handy. You’ll need your account again during license activation, so don’t close out your Rank Math dashboard just yet.
Step 2: Install the Free Rank Math Plugin (If Needed)
Rank Math Pro works as an addon to the free Rank Math plugin. If you don’t have the free version installed, here’s how I add it:
- Log in to your WordPress dashboard.
- Go to Plugins > Add New and search for “Rank Math”.
- Click Install Now, then Activate once installation completes.
If you already have the free version, make sure it’s updated before moving to the next step. Updating plugins eliminates common bugs and keeps everything running smoothly.
Step 3: Upload and Install Rank Math Pro
Now it’s time to upload the Pro plugin file. This part is easy when you know where to look ( I did not know where to look at first, until I did the unusual act of reading the instructions):
- Inside your WordPress dashboard, go to Plugins > Add New.
- Click the Upload Plugin button at the top.
- Choose the Rank Math Pro ZIP file you downloaded earlier and click Install Now. I actually had 3 of these files because I kept clicking on the upload button, until I realized where I had to go to find them!
- After the file uploads, click Activate Plugin.
Your site now has both the free and Pro versions installed. The Pro features layer on top of the free plugin, so you keep all your settings and posts. If you’ve installed or updated plugins before, the process feels pretty familiar.
Step 4: Connect and Activate Your Rank Math Pro License
Your Pro plugin won’t unlock its advanced features until you activate your license. Here’s how I finish the connection:
- Go to Rank Math > Dashboard in WordPress.
- Look for a “Connect Your Account” or “Activate License” button and click it.
- Sign in using your Rank Math account credentials (the same ones from the website purchase).
- Approve the connection and confirm that the license is active. The dashboard should show your plan name, and any Proonly modules will be available.
If you manage several sites, you can use the same account for them, depending on your license. Activating the license makes sure you always get updates and premium support, which I find really helpful.
Step 5: Initial Setup Wizard and Configuration
Once Rank Math Pro is active, the setup wizard usually pops up. This process helps you configure the big SEO basics, even if you’re not an expert.
- Site Data: The wizard asks for your website type (blog, business, shop, etc.), which helps preconfigure options.
- SEO Tweaks: You can set search engine visibility, enable breadcrumbs, and other core options right from the start.
- Connect Google Account: Linking to your Google account lets you see analytics and rankings in your dashboard, which I check often.
If you skip the wizard or want to make changes later, revisit it at any time by going to Rank Math > Dashboard and clicking the Setup Wizard tab. Even after installation, I recommend going through each tab in Rank Math’s settings to personalize options for your site’s needs. When I did this, I went to an instructions video from RankMath and I followed the steps and suggestions. I figured that the founders/builders of RankMath know their business so I followed the recommendations given in the instructions.
Step 6: Enable the Pro Features and Advanced Modules
Rank Math Pro comes packed with extra features for advanced users, and I always like to explore new modules. Here’s how I enable them:
- Visit Rank Math > Dashboard and look for the “Modules” tab.
- Switch on Proonly modules, like Schema Generator, Keyword Rank Tracker, WooCommerce SEO, Image SEO, and more.
- Configure each module by clicking the “Settings” link as needed.
I usually turn on modules one at a time, test a few pages, and then continue activating more to avoid any surprise conflicts with other plugins. I just like to take things slow.
Step 7: Migrate or Import Settings (If Needed)
If you’re moving from another SEO plugin (like Yoast or All in One SEO), Rank Math Pro makes migration pretty easy. I’ve not had to do this myself because I started with RankMath but here is what to do if you have to:
- During the wizard, look for an “Import Data” option. If you miss it, find it under Rank Math > Status & Tools > Import & Export.
- Select your previous plugin and check which data you want to import, such as meta titles, descriptions, focus keywords, redirects, and schema.
- Click “Import” and wait for the process to finish. Review your site to confirm everything looks right.

Step 8: Testing, Troubleshooting, and Best Practices
With Rank Math Pro installed, a quick test run can save you headaches later. Here’s my checklist after installation:
- Check a few published posts to confirm the new SEO options appear under the editor.
- Look at your sitemap (typically yourdomain.com/sitemap_index.xml) to make sure it’s updated by Rank Math.
- Use the “SEO Analysis” feature under Rank Math > SEO Analysis for a quick overview of possible improvements.

Then it took me about 5 or 6 months to decided that RankMath free tier just was not enough to get my articles optimized as fast as I wanted. I would suggest only to someone who already has RankMath free version that they definitely should get the Pro tier because they would be able to do so much more with their websites. But if someone is using a different SEO optimizing platform than RankMath, then, no, I would not recommend that they drop that platform to sign up with RankMath only because I have never come across any proof that RankMath is the best platform. It is good and may be one of the best but it is not perfect ( I could do an article or blog post explaining why I say this) but I am sure that other platforms are also good.

As far as recommending that others should move from free tier to Pro, I suggest that others do so only if they are anxious to raise their article ranking status as quickly as possible like me. I really do love the schema generator also because it adds more professional looking sections to my articles like the table of contents blocks and FAQ sections where you can add an image next to each question. But my main reason for signing up with Pro was because I was impatient to get my post ranking numbers into the high 80s or 90s.as fast as possible. Anyway, thank you for the great comment. -MAC
